The former capital of the Khmer Empire, Angor Wat is one of the world’s most remarkable Hindu sites hidden deep in the jungle. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ruins date back to 9th Century CE and were built in the honor of the Hindu God Vishnu. Every corner of the grounds is steeped in history and mystery. Aside from the temple, there are various other archaeological gems to explore onsite – such as the 1800 intricate carvings of ‘The Dancing Maidens’, as well as magnificent walls depicting numerous levels of heaven and hell.
You can find Angkor Wat close to the town Siem Reap, just north of the Tonlé Sap Lake. To see a spectacle of light cast against the ancient temple walls and surrounding water, visit the temple before sunrise. A word of caution, though – beware of the local monkeys swarming the place as they will try their luck at stealing your possessions!
