Most of us spent our golden childhood days reading fairy tales and immersed in the magic of Disney films – all of which is, sadly, make believe. So you might find it hard to believe that magical, fairy-tale-worthy places really do exist in the world…
In fact, such locations actually formed the inspiration for the films we know and love today! For example, the recent film Avatar traveled to the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in China for its landscape inspiration. Likewise, Disney’s famous Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland is based on the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, located in Bavaria in Germany. Read on for more dreamlike magical places that really do exist!
Petra is a very famous archaeological site, located in the desert and dating back to around 300 BC. The city was literally carved into the sandstone rock, with beautiful pink, red, white and yellow colors that are best seen as early at sunrise. The most famous building is the Monastery known as El-Deir, which is the doorway to the city, and probably began life as a temple. The city was carved out of the land by the Nabataeans, who grew rich through trade with the Romans and Greeks, before being absorbed by the Roman Empire. There’s a combination of architectural styles across the city, and it’s estimated only around 15% of the city has yet been uncovered. Lying forgotten by most for approximately 1000 years, Petra was rediscovered by a curious European in the 1800s. Since then it has become one of Jordan’s major tourist attractions and has featured in an Indiana Jones film.
